Ageing Effect on Cell Renewing in Duodenum of Mice as Revealed by Autoradiographic Study

Abstract
Postnatal growth and ageing effect on the cell renewal system of duodenal tissues were observed by means of microautoradiography. As experimental animals, 29 male and 38 female mice devided into different age groups; suckling young (4-day, 1 week, 2-week, and 3-week old), young adult (6-week old) and old adult (more than 50-week old) were observed. Single dose of H©ø-thymidine, 0.8 microcurie per gram of body weight were administered by intraperitoneal injection and labeling indices were counted through autoradiographs.
1. Cell renewal of the duodenal epithelium showed a generally high rate throughout the various ages. In the suckling young, the radioactive index rose progressively attaining a maximal value in the young adult groups.
2. In regards to the lamina propria, labelings were gradually decreased reaching minimal level in 3-week group. But in the young adult ages the renewing frequency showed a considerable rise.
3. The cell renewing behavior of the tunics muscularis externa differed from the above tissue components, rather it showed similar pattern of general muscular tissue. To elaborate, younger the age, higher the radioactive index. Finally, after 3 weeks almost no nuclear labeling was observed.
4. That the ovarian cycle has strong influence on the renewal of the epithelial cell was demonstrated during estrus of the young adult. A reverse phenomen was detected in the old adult, whether ageing effect and hormonal influence are involved factors in cell renewing still remains to be elucidated.
